"Better is one’s own dharma imperfectly
performed than the dharma of another performed
to perfection."
– Bhagavad Gita
Dharma – character, spirit, suchness
This chapter is meant to be read
in conjunction
with the film THE GROUNDHOG DAY.
It is to
be used as a down to earth example
of the
four stages of the process of
realization
from the Impulsive Self to the
Realizing
Self.
Impulsive Self- dominated by
urges
Opportunistic Self – plays a role to get
the preferred reward
Socialized Self – chooses to
limit self centered
actions for the good of all
Realizing Self – grounded in
the present
moment and makes conscious choices
based
on the universal principles of
justice and
care for all.
The Hero Myth is about freeing oneself from
cultural programming that prevents psychological
and spiritual development.
Fear conditioning creates the
programmed
self. The programmed self is
composed of
choices made, mostly by others,
regarding
who and what you will be. The
PAC Complex
(power, authority, and control)
prevents
psychological health.
Exercise: Assign a percentage to each factor listed
below that you think represents its importance
in shaping who you are today:
Genetics:
______________
Upbringing:
______________
Individual Experience:
______________
Culture:
______________
Individual Choice:
______________
Total
100%
I have three reasons for using this exercise:
First - it helps to enlarge the therapeutic frame
Second - it decreases the extreme mindset that
we all seem to have
Third - to emphasize cultural influences on self
and family
The SR machine is automatic response to present
stimulus based on past programming. Conscious
choice is only possible in the present, cultivating
mindfulness is essential.
“What you are looking for is the one who
is looking.”
-Saint Francis of Assisi
The Realizing Self is not a thing
or a product.
It is an ongoing process of insight
and embodiment,
realizing higher and higher levels
of Being
and Knowing.
